Scottish-born, London-based artist Steve Goodman has been exploring the dreadful, fear-inducing uses of sound and how it can negatively affect people at least since his book Sonic Warfare: Sound, Affect, and the Ecology of Fear hit the shelves in 2009. As a child, I did not realise how intensely the sound design in these games – the eerie atmospheres, acousmatic background noises, unsettling “save room” themes and the howling and screeching of various creatures – affected my whole being. Knaga's work can be found in private collections, galleries, public art spaces, magazines, department stores, and on physical and digital products.Back in the late 90s and early 00s, I remember sitting in a dark living room with my brothers, watching the elder of the two playing horror games like Resident Evil 2 or Silent Hill 3 and sci-fi first-person shooters like Half-Life and Quake III Arena, always on the verge of shitting my pants. Knaga is also a design educator and co-founder of Art and Action Community Lab. The use of color exploits historical and sometimes fictional references through anthropological studies, mapmaking, and storytelling. Her works investigate flora, landscapes, and our relationship with the environment by layering shape, image, color, and story. Knaga's work is influenced by nature, including her childhood growing up on her grandparents' farm and living on the west coast. She designs fun projects for her clients by day while renovating a house and building her dream vegetable garden with her partner and 2 beautiful kiddos on nights and weekends. He has provided artwork for public and private events, some of which included Chad Smith, from the band Red Hot Chili Peppers, performing in front of his work to designing the concert poster of Grammy Award-winning cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Farfán's creative process comes from utilizing a range of mediums and integrating stylistic techniques from realism to abstraction to create his pieces. As he grew up, he noticed that other people had their own stories to tell which he related to and uses as inspiration. Whatever was troubling him or whenever he just wanted to forget what was going on in the world around him, he found refuge in his art and would draw his favorite cartoon characters he would see on TV. Farfán began to draw as a form of therapy as he struggled through his anxiety. Sergio Farfán blends the experiences from his hometown in Peru with the life he's lived in Chicago to create works that focus on the struggles, dreams, and emotions that people go through in their life.
